The Lansford Police Department is located on 1 West Ridge St. on the first floor of the Community Center. As of April 2009, the Lansford Police Department operates under Mayor Ron Hood. The department consists of Chief John Turcmanovich, a Sergeant and four full time officers. The roster also includes part time officers to provide 24 hour protection to the Borough of Lansford. The Lansford Police Department provides mutual aid to surrounding communities. Our police department was organized in 1876 when the borough was incorporated. Previously, the department was part of the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company security police or as known locally, "The Coal and Iron Cops". The first Chief of Police was Edgar Cullin. | The darkest hour in the history of the department came on October 9, 1912 when Officer Morgan Morgans was shot and killed while on duty during the night and responding to a burglary call. He left behind a wife and 3 small children. Officer Morgans' name is listed in the Police Memorial Hall of Fame in Washington D.C as being remembered and honored for sacrificing his life in the service of the citizens of Lansford. Over the years the size of the department has fluctuated from as low as 2 officers to a high of 7 officers, with the average of 4 to 5 officers. Presently the size of the department is 5 full time and 4 part time officers. The five full time officers working today come from different backgrounds. Age wise they range from late 50’s to early 20’s. The amount of education and training possessed by the five officers is quite extensive. Two officers have college degrees that cover Police Science, Education and Psychology. |
In order the people present are: Officer Jeff Ohl, Chief John Turcmanovich, Officer David Midas, Governor Rendell, Officer Christopher Ondrus, Officer Robert Shubeck, Speaker McCall, Councilman Len Kovach. | | Two members of the department are also former members of the United States Marine Corp. The training and background of the department and officers gives the organization the capability to handle just about any problem that arises, but still allows us to know when we need assistance from outside agencies. The Lansford Police Department has been changing constantly over the years for the better and still is and will continue to change through training and education, and working together as a team and with the community at large to meet the challenges of the future. |
